They observe whatever their target is doing and replicate their behavior upon it, say for example you're scared of a lizard. If so, then he'll do his best to stray further away from you next time you visit his area(assuming he stays alive for 4-6 months) They only see limited amt of what you see, so they aren't even detecting fear off your face or anything like that. It's just pure 6th sense. And another case, let's assume that he wants to take advantage of a fertile land(fungi having) like a wet area. Be it pond or sewers he'll invite out his friends to venture on the expedition with him, one gets tortured and culled and others survive. I think they know that their consciousness just moves on from one another through cortisol. This is why they do this, and this is why they can regrow tails while no other animal can, they have no use for those abilities anyways. Which again is why in comic books the lizard men show telepathic abilities and in various conspiracies the Rothschild or the royal families are depicted as having immortality. Both are correlated by the way, telepathy would eventually lead to long living, since existence for them is a cycle i.e = near death contact with another reptilian Hylonomus telepathically transfers their subconscious to them or gives cortisol via bodily mortification.
