Is a high dose of adderall an effective way to cut lots of weight in a short period of time without increased physical activity?
I know most weight loss benefits from adderall come from it absolutely nuking your appetite, but most of that gets gained back. However I know that because it’s a stimulant it increases your heart rate and definitely increases your BMR, making you burn more calories regardless of how much more you moved. This lead me to thinking of a strategy that would make you lose an insane amount of weight very quickly with minimal effort, and with no injections or glps needed.
I see people throw out numbers like “100-200”, “0-50” and even people saying that the calories are essentially negligible (this is low iq imo because if you want to lose weight usually you lose it in very low amounts gradually over months
). I think a lot of the confusion comes from the varying doses of adderall, as some people only are prescribed 10mg in XRs whilst some are prescribed 80+mg in IRs.
It is a very researched drug, so take a look at some of the studies/threads I looked at;
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

It’s also worth noting again that adderall is already KNOWN to cause weight loss from the decreased appetite, so many people just attribute weight loss from adderall to the appetite and completely disregard any impact the BMR effect may have in causing that weight
This would roughly be equivalent to a 250 or so deficit if you do the calculations (1lb = 3500 cals, 3500 / 14 =250)

STIMULANT TOLERANCE
This is probably the most important thing to consider about adderall. You will get used to it, and it fucks with not only your appetite but your mind and cognitive skills.
If you eat food after you’ve been on adderall you’ll realize it tastes better then when your on the drug because you actually have an appetite, for many people this is how they avoid weight loss long term from adderall, they will take it 5 days on 2 days off to minimize stimulant tolerance (your body getting used to the drug and producing less dopamine and other chemicals naturally), usually taking it during the workdays, and cycling off it during weekends. This is how many obese adhdcels stay fat and bloated despite being on a stimulant. They are simply eating 100-200 cals under their maintenance during the week, then have a big chungus appetite during the weekends and eat 600+ cals above it, essentially resetting their weight loss during the week.

Now, you probably think that doing 5 days on 2 days off isn’t ideal then, therefore you just take it everyday.
This would be a great idea if it was that simple, but the truth is that we still need to take a break from the stimulant, one that is similar to this split/cycle.
If we took the drug everyday like I mentioned before, we would build tolerance, and much of this tolerance would impact the bodies BMR, and you would almost definitely stop having the increased heart rate / other effects which make you burn more calories naturally. Aside from that, eventually we would develop a consistently “reduced” appetite and be somewhat hungry for food, which is not good, we want no cravings.
The solution is merely one day of being sober from adderall, and possibly 2 days, depending on how your body is affected.
So pretty much if you want to keep the appetite where you are basically forcing yourself to eat, and also burning 200+
more calories, you would definitely want to risk being hungry for a day every week in order to keep these effects. (Over for low-willpowercels
)
Because of the aforementioned hunger sobriety gives you, the adderall withdrawals after you lost the weight would be detrimental to all your progress. For most people with average/slightly above average willpower they would succumb to these and overeat a fuck ton of these lost calories back, which is not good.
However this strategy will lose you so much weight that it will be pretty hard to even gain 20% of the lost weight back, so honestly low willpowercels who are destined to stay fat forever can just fuck off because any weight loss strat they do won’t work for them anyways, it’s just their mindset JFL.

Now, I don’t know how the impact of increasing adderall dosage exactly compounds, but most studies say there is most likely a point of significantly decreased/no further returns for increasing it, However, despite this, an increase is needed due to stimulant resistance. Assuming there isn’t a point or the point is much higher (100+mg), then this would only make this strategy even better. (with more risks of course)
(Theoretically
) you could take a short-term (1–2 month) Adderall IR cycle using morning dosing 6 days on / 1 day off. Start at ~20 mg (or appetite-suppressing dose), increase by 10 mg daily until the off day (≈20–80 mg). After the off day, restart 10 mg higher than the original start (usually ~30 mg), again increasing by 10 mg daily until the next off day (≈30–90 mg), and repeat. Maintain high water intake, eat only when genuinely hungry (higher-protein foods help), and use supplements to offset nutrient loss. My idea is mild starvation with little exercise, theoretically enabling rapid, extreme weight loss, giving you a Christian Bale the mechanist type transformation.
Adderall cycled at an extremely high dose will probably make you lose a lot of weight very quickly especially if you have good willpower. The majority of this lost weight is due to eating less, but the increase in BMR is significant and underrated.
if you go on r/adhd or browse posts on here or .org you’ll see people post about adderall causing lots of weight loss, here’s one post for example. It is already known for causing weight loss as a side effect in some
people, but many don’t know it can really be a strategy for losing weight.

THE EVIDENCE FOR METABOLISM BOOST
Online I see mixed evidence from discussion and research about how much adderall actually impacts your baseline metabolism.I see people throw out numbers like “100-200”, “0-50” and even people saying that the calories are essentially negligible (this is low iq imo because if you want to lose weight usually you lose it in very low amounts gradually over months

Although there is evidence suggesting that, in addition to suppressing food consumption, amphetamine reduces body weight by increasing energy expenditure, there is little consistency among the few studies examining that factor. In this experiment, the effect of amphetamine on daily energy...

It’s also worth noting again that adderall is already KNOWN to cause weight loss from the decreased appetite, so many people just attribute weight loss from adderall to the appetite and completely disregard any impact the BMR effect may have in causing that weight
MY EXPERIENCE WITH IT ON MY METABOLISM
I don’t think using anecdotal evidence is a good way to reason, but in my experience (when I used to track cals, and I did it pretty good) when I took adderall and ate the same amount of food I normally do without it, and yet still lost weight. And this was 1 lb I lost over 2 or so weeks, this is at a decently low dose and not even everyday (10mg on week days, on weekends none).
This would roughly be equivalent to a 250 or so deficit if you do the calculations (1lb = 3500 cals, 3500 / 14 =250)

SO DOES IT BOOST METABOLISM
From what I have seen online and with my personal experience + friends experience, I think it can be concluded that adderall definitely increases your metabolism / BMR. At at a regular dose in most people it increases BMR by 190 calories or around 10% of your maintenance calories. At this point you might be thinking that the impacts of a slight caloric burning boost is useless, considering the appetite suppression will get you 4-5 times more weight loss than it, but you have to consider this is for month or two, turning a small increase into something very significant because it’s basically 2-4 extra pounds you’re losing.
