The well-known phrase ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ is a testament to our belief that attractiveness is ephemeral. For example, the philosopher David Hume is often quoted for making the argument that beauty, ‘is no quality in things themselves: it exists merely in the mind which contemplates them; and each mind contemplates a different beauty’
While individual and cross-cultural differences exist, this politically correct view of beauty is to some extent false. Actually, agreement between individuals is one of the best-documented findings in facial attractiveness research since the 70s. Across many studies it has been found that there is a high degree of agreement from people within a particular culture and also high agreement between people from different cultures
If different people can agree on which faces are attractive and which are not attractive when judging faces of varying ethnic background, then this suggests that people everywhere are all using similar criteria in their judgements.
Symmetry
Facial Symmetry plays an integral role in the attractiveness of one’s face, studies have found people prefer symmetrical faces, much more to even the same faces that had been simply morphed to be asymmetrical
Here is an example of a face with high amounts of symmetry
Averageness
Overall ethnic averageness also determines one’s total facial appeal, this is to say that a face closer to the ethnic average of the person’s racial background has been found to be much more attractive
You can see how even simple changes in features can affect facial aesthetics
Dimorphism
Sexually dimorphic features, specifically masculinized features on males, and feminized features on females, can determine how sexually proficient, and healthy one is viewed. Greatly adding to overall attractiveness
Notice that the female face that shares femininely dimorphic features is more appealing, same with the male face with masculinely dimorphic features
Physical beauty is completely objective
