The temporalis muscle is a broad, fan-shaped muscle on the side of your skull that acts as a primary muscle of (chewing). It facilitates powerful jaw closure (elevation) and pulls the lower jaw backward (retraction). You can feel it contract by placing your fingers on your temple and clenching your teeth.
