Its really unfortunate that he's a r****d socially, I mean I am too but I know that I should at least act NT irl, he tries to sound smart and not use Ebonics, fair enough for him but he's actively being a r****d in conversations so the fact that he's speaking formally won't do anything for him

He is far from me. When one speaks formally, you have different levels. I just speak lightly formal when around other peers. I speak formally with elders or of middle aged people of high class. Never try to sound smart among the masses.

Yes, sprinkle in a few bits of modern slang or whatever is popular in the moment. Personally here I can speak at my peak formality since it is the internet, it also gives me a reputation for taking things seriously which I mostly do but I do have my soft moments where I behave my age. Yet the main point is that you should know the people who you are trying to join along with.
