After extensive searching on YouTube I found only three relevant videos by the same makeup artist, which show great skill and give good advice.
I will list the points most interesting to me after each video.
The use of stippling and a black water-based paint to masculinise and define the jaw with stubble is genius
Like very much the squaring off of any feminine roundness from the jaw line with a dark contouring shade
The brick-red blush is a natural-looking shade, applied to the upper cheeks under the eyes, rather than out to the sides to highlight high cheek bones, and in a way which squares rather than rounds the forehead. It hits the bridge of the nose as the sun would. It looks so natural, unlike pink or coral etc.
The bronzer is used on the sides of the face to narrow (masculinise) and to tan the bridge of the nose as would the sun
Really interesting contouring and highlighting patterns.
Male contouring of the cheekbone goes down either side of the mouth to emphasise a stronger jaw, and a longer lower face
Highlighting to strengthen and widen the mid section of the nose, which would visually narrow both the tip and the bridge! Very clever indeed
The artist applied the blusher too high up and too far from the centre for my tastes. It should (in my book) have been that red-brick shade as in the second video.
Tips of my own..
Fake tan
• Apply a good highlighting shade/concealer on the outer corner of your eye and upper eyelid to hide any redness. This is also a reverse of the feminine darker outer corner of the eye emphasis.
• Highlight the 'milk line' above the top lip, and the philtral columns with carefully placed lines of highlight which are then blended very slightly.
• After finishing with powder, remove excess makeup from the lips with vaseline and a cotton bud to create a healthy-looking discreet edge around the lips.
• Square the chin using a highlighting shade; a feminine chin is more triangular
Emphasise the brow (bossing) using a highlighting shade above the eyebrows, where appropriate
• Highlight the inner corner of the eye for a healthy fresh look, shade the crease of the inner corner slightly, shade under the lashes at the outer corner of each eye slightly, and also a tiny bit on the top lids on the inner corner near the lash line. This is almost a total reverse of the feminine eye make-up pattern
• Darken, define and possibly thicken the eyebrows downwards with a shade of eyebrow powder identical to the natural colour, emphasising the inner and central brows, the opposite of creating a feminine arched brow.
What is attractive in a male face?
Broad forehead
Relatively longer lower face
Prominent chin and brow
Chiseled jaw and defined cheekbones
Red and yellow tones in the skin
This is what the artist says:
How far you go with men's makeup is completely up to you. Granted i don't want people to say "look he's got foundation on" i want people to think i look really good. Thats it. For me - thats what makeup is all about - looking good.
Each step here is optional. They all build onto one another so take what you like and leave the rest behind
Men wear makeup. Film stars wear markup. News readers wear makeup. And now more men in the street are wearing makeup.
I never ever ever recommend a liquid foundation for men unless they are completely shaven (face) and even then i prefer powders (mineral etc...) because they look more natural. You never want to ever looked caked in makeup. This is about enhancing what you naturally have.
Mineral foundation comes in many varieties but try and get one that is matte based or unless you have very dry skin or prefer the "moist" look then go for the original. Bare escentuals is my favourite one to use on men. It doesn't collect in the beards and looks natural.
Using blush is a scary thing but when done correctly it will give you the illusion of instant health and sun tanned skin - when combined with bronzer. The reason i use NARS exhibit A is because its brick red. All tanned skins has some form of "burn" to it. Using a colour this bright will really make you look like you've been outside in the sun. Or even on a cold winters day will make you look like you've been out for a crisp walk.
All products should contain NO SHIMMER. Mens skin should be totally matte and have no shimmer or glitter. Using products with shimmer or glitter will really draw attention to what you're doing.
Contouring the beard is completely optional but if you're fair or want to really go to town on "designer stubble" this is the way to do it. It can also help hide a double check and sharpen up the jaw line. I love this trick. However you do need some amount of stubble to begin with. WIthout this it will look "fake" upon closer inspection.
Curling your lashes can open up the eyes and give them a more awake look. Lightly coating them with a waterproof liquid liner will give the impression of black lashes without screaming "mascara" because they won't look thicker only darker. Great for fair haired gentlemen (like myself).
NOTE: NEVER EVER EVER MESS WITH YOUR EYEBROWS TOO MUCH!
Here are the steps:
1. Apply a mineral foundation or pressed powder all over the face with a kabuki brush or big fluffy brush.
2. Apply Nars Exhibit A blush to the cheek bones, bridge of the nose and temples.
3. Blend that in with the mineral foundation or pressed powder.
4. Use a bronzer around the outer part of the face. Temples. Sides of face (outer cheeks), jaw line, neck and bridge of nose.
5. Contour your beard with a black or brown product designed for this area.
6. Curl lashes.
7. Apply a waterproof liquid liner to the lashes.
