(TLDR AT THE END FOR ATTENTIONSPANCELS)

As someone who’s been training mostly in grappling(wrestling fs) and recently boxing
And both have been in a couple of street altercations and seen a few
I think I have good enough of a perspective on what would work and what wouldn’t

I’ll be analysing each sport in 4 criterias
-practicality
-effect on looks
-risks and injuries
-availability

I don’t wanna make this long bc it doesn’t need to be so my analysis will be directly to the point

1-BOXING
Boxing is the most known and popular martial art/self defence sport in the world
Boxing’s emphasis compared to other striking arts (such as muy Thai and kickbox)
Lies on head movement, footwork and set ups
An elite boxer dances in the ring and makes the opponent look stupid for missing

-practicality: boxing is very practical in most scenarios against a man
Teaches footwork, timing and clean counters
But it’s (like any other striking sport) limited in situations where you are grabbed
if someone grabs a hold of you, specially a man that’s bigger and stronger, boxing will not do much

-effects on looks: the absolute highest exposure to facial injuries (cuts, broken noses, dental injuries, even cauliflower ears)

-risks: higher rates of facial lacerations, contusion and fractures

-availablity: pretty much anywhere
Wether you’re in a large metropolitan city or a small town, there’s gonna be a boxing gym around the corner

2-KICK-BOXING
Is a modified version of boxing
Less emphasis on footwork and head movement
While kicks and knees and striking to the lower body are allowed

Practicality:
might be unpopular but I would say it is even more practical than boxing,
The range of striking is way longer since you can kick with your foot and in a street scenario, that’s perhaps the safest way to end a fight (if u calf kick a guy 2-3 times in the same place, he would think twice about his intention)
But has the same restrictions as boxing, helpless if grabbed by someone bigger and stronger

Effects on looks: pretty much everything that was on boxing + visible signs on the lower body, bruising and shin scarring
Occasionally contusions on hips or ribs
All of which as a girl you would not want

Risks: everything in boxing+ lower body damages, knee strains and ligament damage (less common tho)

Availablity: while not as available as boxing
It’s still very much available in most locations

3-WRESTLING
wrestling and grappling are a more primal and natural way of fighting, one body pushing against the other, you see it in nature, bears grappling and deers pushing their antlers against each other
Emphasis on hand movements, level changes and different takedowns

Practicality: pure wrestling doesn’t involve submissions or strikes of any sort
No ground control
And very importantly size and strength are huge factors in wrestling
I weigh at 78-79 kilos and pretty strong for my weight
But A 95 kilo guy who’s even less experienced and less technical would beat me in most matchups
so for a foid that weighs way less, it’s just not practical

Effects on looks and injuries:
Relatively low risk compared to striking sports
Cauliflower ear is possible (but can be highly avoided using headgear)
Some bruising, collisions possible
Sprains and strains(knees, angles and wrists) are frequent
Skin infection of done in high intensity without proper hygiene

Availablity: not very available for foids

4-BRAZILIAN JUI JITSU (BJJ)
Very ground focused grappling art
Prioritises positional control and submissions

Practicality:
Out of all, in a 1 on 1 situation
Bjj is the most practical against a bigger man
Teaching on how to scape holds, huge emphasis on control and defence on the ground
It is one of the only sports in which a smaller less stronger more experienced person can consistently outdo a bigger and stronger less experienced one

Effects on looks and risks:
lower risk, temporary bruises and swelling
Mat abrasions are more common
Skin infections if done in high intensity without proper hygiene
Sprains and strains, some finger and hand injuries are the risks

Availablity: growing rapidly across the world
Available in all major/medium sized western cities

SUMMARY : I gave explanation and notes on the 4 of the most popular martial arts in the world only to get to this point
IF YOU’RE A GIRL AND WANT TO GET INTO ANY MARTIAL ART WITH THE SOLE PURPOSE OF SELF DEFENCE,
SIMPLY DON’T
relatively all of these sports are considered unsafe and too damaging on the body
If you actually want to get good on any of these, you must take damage
You must take punishment
You wouldn’t learn how to box if u just go and hit the pads once a week,
For that, you need to get hit in the face

And aside from all these
YOU DON’T KNOW WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN IN THE STREET
YOU DONT KNOW UF THERE ARE MULTIPLE PEOPLE, IF THEY CARRY WEAPONS

instead
GO FOR A POCKET KNIFE OR A PEPPER SPRAY
THEY ARE LEGAL IN A LOT OF COUNTRIES IN EUROPE
I know some girls that get away with carrying, I’m not sure how much the law is actually enforced
But they’re cheaper, more effective and less time consuming solution if safety is a concern of yours.

TLDR:
If you’re a foid concerned with your safety
Don’t get into martial arts, too damaging, expensive and time consuming
going for pepper spray/pocket knife is going to be a way better solution
