most boring story I've ever read

unbearably dry and uneventful, some of the dialogue sequences were entertaining but overall just so unmemorable I can't even criticize the rest. maybe I didn't fully grasp the themes being expressed or I didn't read enough of chekovs influences but whatever, a good book shouldn't require 50 layers of context and analysis to be enjoyed.

basically it's about a doctor who loses his mind while caring for insane patients. though it's not really shown in an interesting or coherent way, among the patients there are only 2 who stick out at all and even then are still just underdeveloped setpieces. (maybe I ask to much of a short story) the rest felt "absurd" but in a performative way, for the sake of genre, not for itself, not authentic. gogols "the nose" was somewhat better but I was spoiled recently by the death of Ivan Ilyich so maybe nothing will satisfy me ever again.
