Comparing racial discrimination in Rhodesia with South Africa (a)

In 1923 Southern Rhodesia became a self-governing country, autonomous in every way, but acknowledging the British queen as monarch. At that time the total population was less than 1,000,000 people.

Rhodesia gave up its independence and became a multi-racial society in 1953 when the Federation of the two Rhodesias and Nyasaland came into being. Two voter rolls were established:

i. The A roll was for anyone with an income that exceeded $300.00 per year or who had a grade 3 education

ii. The B roll was for everyone else

Schools were still segregated based on location as most black schools were located in the Tribal Trust Lands. Blacks could enroll in white schools where school fees were higher.

Blacks could buy property or land anywhere in Rhodesia as long as they had the capital and there were some very wealthy African or black businessmen.

In 1963 the Federation was dissolved and Northern Rhodesia became Zambia and Nyasaland became Malawi. At that time the British government tried to force Rhodesia to create a single voter’s roll and to install a majority black government. The white Rhodesians resisted as they had seen chaos in the Congo and Kenya where white settlers and missionaries were being slaughtered. Negotiations with the British government continued until November, 1965. When Rhodesia declared its independence from Britain and United Nations sanctions were imposed, virtually isolating Rhodesia from the rest of the world and dependent on South Africa for its oil supplies. Race relations were excellent though the seeds of African nationalism were rapidly spreading through the country and this lead to the formation of ZANU and ZAPU.

In South Africa there was real segregation of the races and the government, under prime minister Henry Verwoerd, instituted the policy of ‘Apartheid’ which meant that certain areas of the country were set aside for blacks and other areas for whites. Neither racial group had any rights or could buy property in the other race’s areas. Everything was segregated and blacks had absolutely no rights in the white areas which lead to harsh criticisms from around the world and condemnation because blacks were unable to buy or rent property or homes in the major cities and were confined to living in African Townships. In simple terms the rights of blacks to own businesses, to progress, to expand were totally restricted in all developing cities or areas. This was radically different from Rhodesia which condemned the principles of ‘apartheid’.

The seeds of African nationalism began in 1958 with the challenges to white power in both the Belgian Congo and Kenya. Joshua Nkomo, a Matabele, headed up the creation of a nationalist group called ZAPU which had no real power until the Federation was broken up in 1963. At that time the Rhodesian government attempted to negotiate a peaceful transition of power to black majority rule over a period of 10 years.

In 1978 the two groups, ZAPU and ZANU formed a coalition, each promising the other that there would be opportunities for a shared government once they won the country from the whites. At that time the Shona population was approximately twice as big as the Matabele population so any elections which might follow a take-over would be dominated by the Shona people.

At the same time the Rhodesian government and the whites did everything possible to counter African terrorism and received strong support from South Africa and Israel. Sanctions hurt the country, but it was amazing to see the spirit of entrepreneurships and factories were built to build virtually everything that had once been imported. The spirit of white Rhodesians was amazing as they fought to win the battles against both the ZAPOU and ZANU terrorist incursions. All white Rhodesians were subject to military training and call-up. Those under 38 would be called up for military service for six weeks and then go home for six weeks.

The transition from white rule to black rule in Rhodesia in 1980 went very smoothly for the first twenty years, with some exceptions. The Zimbabwe constitution which had to be approved by Britain before independence guaranteed the rights of the whites and a select number of seats in parliament, which included former Prime Minister Ian Smith at the beginning. After assuming power as president Robert Mugabe was concerned that the minority, previously warlike, Matabele might rise up against him as there was growing dissention in that minority part of the country. Mugabe sent his then Minister of Intelligence and now the current president of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa with a specially trained hit group, known as the North Korean Fifth Brigade, into Matabeleland and they slaughtered over 2,200 Matabele and buried their bodies in empty mine shafts and mass gave sites dug by bulldozers. When the British and US governments were apprised of this genocide they hushed it up as they had been responsible for supporting Mugabe and getting him elected.

In the year 2,000 the restrictions imposed upon Mugabe by the British in the new constitution expired and Robert Mugabe began a massive seizure of white owned farms in Zimbabwe which resulted in the murder of some whites, the destruction of many farmhouses and much of the farm equipment. These seized farms were handed to Mugabe supporters and war veterans. Unable to run the farms these once productive farms fell into disrepair and the new owners were unable to produce new crops. The result was that country that was once known as the breadbasket of Africa, a country with the highest standard of living, the highest standard of education and the highest standard of health care of any country in Africa became a derelict nation unable to feed itself and with an economy that collapsed. Inflation peaked at over 1,500,000$ with worthless currency and unemployment in excess of 90%. I currently hold a $100 trillion banknote which was part of the last currency issued before the country reverted to accepting only US dollars. The country is bankrupt again after a brief surge and they are now printing worthless bond notes.

In conclusion the people of Zimbabwe now recognize that a once beautiful and productive nation was better off under white rule than it is under the control of despots. President Mnangagwa has assured no opposition his power by appointing only members of the armed forces to his cabinet and he has usurped the role of the police, transferring this to members of the Fifth Brigade. It breaks my heart see what happened to the country of my birth. As a seventh generation African and third generation Rhodesian/Zimbabwean my heart cries out for the destitute and often homeless farmers and those who served the country for many years and have lost their pensions and all forms of support. The older white people have no money, cannot leave the country and are now dependent on charity—if available.
I cannot overstate the national pride of the white people of Rhodesia who are spread throughout the world, very few left in Zimbabwe. Yes, we were a proud people, loved our country, bled for our country and cry as we see what has happened to it. During the terrorist war there was extensive propaganda to try and educate the African people as to the dangers of supporting the terrorists (I do not call them guerillas). The Ministry of Internal Affairs was largely responsible for winning the hearts and minds of the people and air drops of pamphlets were also a very successful tool. As a district commissioner I headed up the ‘Hearts and Minds’ war in several districts and was responsible for re-settling 21,000 people into protected villages in what was then the hottest past of the border war zone-The Honde Valley.

The men and women of Internal Affairs were at the front in the propaganda war, but it is extremely difficult to win over people who are being tortured, brutalized, r***d, forced to eat their own body parts and terrorized to the point that hey cowered before the terrorists. Simply the tactics of Mao Tse Tung as espoused in his ‘Little Red Book’.

Yes, I wish my home country of Rhodesia had remained stable. Switching to majority rule was inevitable and the change of name to Zimbabwe does not bother me.
