I finally was able to get in the orthodontists office after a six month wait list. The original consultation was for lower crowding but I decided to take advantage of it.
To preface I am eighteen and should be pretty close to done with facial growing.
Heres the breakdown :
• I complained about poor quality of sleep and “suspected sleep apnea”
• mentioned chewing issues
• emphasized my unhappiness with jaw asymmetry.
To nobody’s surprise but my own the orthodontist ignored most of my concerns. He started talking about TMJ and facial massages to correct any facial tension or headaches. Breezed past airway and sleep concerns, suggested some nose pot
I thought my asymmetry was skeletal but he said that it was likely my overdeveloped masseters. Told me I should have my teeth lightly close and I need to stop being so stressed all the time. Noted that he did visibly notice that I have a deviation to the right.
Measurements were not provided but I heard a 3.3 overjet, class one maloclusion, 2mm deviation and then some other numbers that I don’t particularly remember. I brought up surgery options and a palette expander. He told me if I wanted to pursue that option I would need screws in my mouth and he wouldn’t recommend it.
Surgery he stated would fix a lot of the problems I have but “everyone is asymmetrical and nobody in real life is perfect”. Basically told me that there’s no use for a pretty girl like me (his words) to get it.
Quoted me $5,600 for top and notion braces. My top teeth are perfect it’s my lower jaw that has issues.
Said if surgical options were being considered it would look closer to $40k.
Do I just give up and take the braces route or do I get a second opinion? I’d appreciate any advice.
