People with infraorbital recession often struggle with the appearance of dark circles for a number of obvious reasons. For one thing, the deep hollow can create shadows making the under eye look darker. Recession also creates âtear troughsâ and if you struggle with any kind of eye bag, the recession will only intensify the abused dog eye look.
Infraorbital recession can be fixed with implants, fillers, etc. but in the mean time, there are always ways to help fraud and mask it.
And this is where I bring in my opinion on âraccoon eyesâ.
(Please note, this is not gonna look good on everybody, like someone with severe under eye hyperpigmentation. So if you struggle with that I donât think this hack is for you. Itâs very case dependent)
You are probably wondering what the fuck Iâm referring to when I say raccoon eyes. Well to cut to the chase, itâs a slang term for tan lines people get from tanning goggles/sunglasses. Some like to call these âraccoon eyesâ as they imitate raccoons in a way.
Youâve probably seen people with these before.
The science behind tanning/tan lines is very simple. Your body produces melanin to defend itself from UV rays, so the darkening of your skin is a result of its defense mechanism. Some people wear bathing suits to create tan lines while they spend time in the sun. Specifically black ones, because black absorbs the most heat. Another hack many use to tan quicker is tan in/on the pool, or spray water on the places theyâd like to tan. Water will reflect the sunlight so it bounces back onto your skin.
The appeal? Well some people like tan lines and some donât. Some people like them because they can see their tanning progress.
âRaccoon eyesâ are a great method to mask infraorbital recession in my opinion, as they give the illusion of natural under eye concealer. One key difference between concealer and these tan lines is that concealer just washes off. But the tan lines on the other hand will last up to several weeks, or even months. Itâs basically permanent (not permanent but ykwim) under eye concealer. Itâs not very uncommon to find people with these specific tan lines and see their magic play out. I myself have friends with infraorbital recession but their raccoon eyes literally just cancel it out. It quite literally makes the recession unnoticeable.
To conquer the dark and dead appearance of infraorbital recession, they give you a more light and lifted look. Your under-eyes will look lighter in comparison to your cheeks and the rest of your face, giving this illusion that they are extra bright. Iâve seen someone on tiktok ask how to get these bc theyâre so cute but she didnât know how to articulate what they are into words
It gives your face more contrast with a âsunkissed lookâ. One thing Iâve noticed is it looks especially striking especially with dark eyelashes and light colored eyes.
Having long, dark, lashes is known to be an effective looksmax because it creates contrast between your lashes and eye color. Causing a bold and intense look. Ian Sommerhalder for example has dark eyelashes and brows, that make his iris look extra bright and fierce in comparison to them.
And when you add raccoon eyes, it almost makes it even more striking because the under eye looks extra bright in comparison to the dark eyelashes.
(YES Iâm aware Farrah Fawcettâs tan looks quite atrocious here but Iâm using her as an example because she does indeed prove how striking it can be)
Plenty of beautiful women have them (men too but Iâve seen it more often on women). Gio Scotti is a huge example. (I personally think it makes her look cuter)
Rae Cambra also has them, and she has infraorbital recession. Yet they mask/compliment her recession
And many women try to incorporate the extra bright under eye look in makeup. Belle Delphine (yes Iâm actually bringing her up) sort of does this herself. Many of her weird clones attempt to replicate it because to be fair, itâs cute.
I was looking for a male example and I found this guy on Pinterest. Who knows if heâs real or ai generated
The only way these tan lines would ever be considered âuglyâ is if it was gigadefined like this. Anytime Iâm referring to raccoon eyes, I obviously donât mean this. If itâs this severe itâs ugly and looks odd. You wouldnât want them to be this defined. The only way theyâd end up this way is if you spent hours cooking in the sun with something plastered to your eyes the entire time.
But even if something like this were to happen, itâs temporary and you can tone it down with makeup. Or speedrun kojic acid soap.
So how would you get âraccoonâ eyes?:
Thereâs a few different ways.
If you are one of those pale people who donât like to tan in general, thereâs not much you can do to get these other than makeup (you might already have them naturally). But I did some research, and apparently some people use overnight lip masks on their cheeks (mainly in the winter since your skin gets dried out). So when you wake up your cheeks will look shiny, rosy and hydrated. I recommend picking a very pigmented lip mask for this so that the color will visibly rub off on you
If you apply the mask in the red area and wait overnight, youâll wake up with some natural color in that area. It could look something like this
Then again, this will probably last a few hours at max. This is definitely the weakest method.
You could also just try A BIT of fake tan (no, not every self tanner looks like burnt Cheeto dust.) and just use it a TINY bit around your face, and contour the area beneath your infras. You would wanna be careful and weary of which tanner you get if youâre pale tho. Pink based fake tan is a thing, and I think that would look way better on a pale person. Itâd look rosier instead of some random patch of bronzer.
Whites are probably able to get the raccoon eye look much easier than ethnics, because some of them even have it naturally. The lighter your skin is, the easier it will be. But then again, ethnics are obviously still able to tan. So this is still achievable for them.
This ethnic girl literally has them herself
when summer rolls around Iâm probably gonna test out those odd looking under eye sunblock patches to see how good of a cheat code they are. What do you guys think of raccoon eyes?

Thereâs a few different ways.
- For one thing, if you like to go to tanning beds, wear those tanning goggles. They will leave you with raccoon eyes/tanning goggle lines.
- When you tan, wear sunglasses. Specifically big rounded lenses.
- Tanning stickers are stickers people put on their skin before they go to tan, so afterwards they can peel it off and itâll look like some fun little design. Well apparently they make shit like this but patches for your undereyes? Iâm not sure why they created this but itâs definitely a method. They call them âunder eye sunblock patchesâ.
