Abrahamic religions, monotheist ones, are the problem, because they were deliberately designed for ecclesiastic government. In polytheism, people look to gods for symbolism and narratives that indirectly inform a shared culture, but generally try not to draw the attention of the gods because the gods are depicted having the worst human traits like children.
In monotheism, people claim authority on behalf of the god that never leaves you alone and has nothing better to do with eternity but sit in judgment of people for reacting to terrors the god could have easily prevented or caused themself.
Nonetheless, never forget that religion is born of not knowing and guessing, and gives benefit to those who suffer by giving faith and comfort from the terror of living. If humans did not have religion, they would invent it.
Even the non religious people have faith in that which they cant know. They cant help it. You cant know everything the future holds or what to expect, so you have to assume the best which may be false.
This phenomenon is seen in animals also; for those interested in that aspect, search for "Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers".
The upshot is that prey animals could not survive if they had the anxiety of being constantly stalked to be killed, so they simply subtract that worry from their mind as though it will never happen. Humans must do the same.
Thus, ideas like an afterlife or reward from powerful forces in nature for good behavior and eventual justice for those who are cruel to us.
