The other day, i was talking with a friend and saw his spotify. i noticed he had a playlist titled emo, and i asked him if he liked emo music. he said yeah, and showed me his playlist full of alex g, radiohead, juice world, and the like. I told him it wasnt emo music and we got into an argument about it. i tried to explain emo's punk roots and showed him emotional hardcore. he was shocked by what actual emo sounded like. this whole interaction showed me how misused the term is. while not as bad as calling radiohead emo, ive noticed many self identifying "emos" just listen to post-hardcore and consider the staples of that genre to be real emo, even though purists would argue they arent. i was also guilty of this, at a point. it makes me question if the meaning of emo has changed over time and if its definition should be broadened beyond the relatively narrow scope of skramz and the like.
