Isn't Mullvad just Tor minus the network and blatantness? Would be the best arguably
Yeah Mullvad is arguably the best you can get at the minute, both Proton and Mullvad though are still ‘spooky’ as both have been shown to do sketchy stuff (Mullvad and Proton keeping logs and in the case of Proton helped the government bust a climate change rally and arrest those organising it), honestly these days your better off just self hosting shit if your that spooked out (which is horribly unideal, but possible).

I only recall proton doing that. Swedish authorities searched Mullvad and found no logs if i remember. Maybe it's different with the browser. No VPN is going to given anonymity anyways

I’m actually looking to self host a XMPP client for messages, if I actually solve how to do so holy moly the GC is never getting leaked again

Next step: getting someone to actually do all that shit to message you back. Messages are already pretty secure anyways, as long as e2ee, the main issue is with the entire system being breached in that scenario. Email is impossible to be secure though, only way to privately use email is to use a provider and sign up through Tor

Oh right, I recall something how Mullvad keeps logs in the background by some guy showing so on YouTube ages ago, but it has been a while. I still think VPNs can be useful to potentially mitigate your traffic (OPSEC and all that), but of course by no means foolproof.

Only useful for hiding from your ISP and obscuring Geolocation but still pretty useful nonetheless

I mean honestly to be fair the most secure way to talk to someone is literally face to face, even then you still have to make sure the other person keeps it confidential. I suppose 100% privacy is pretty much impossible, but of course I believe you should do your best to protect it as I believe our shit is our shit if you know what I mean, no one else’s.

Man you’re a smart guy, you know about this lingo more than I do hands down. Props.

It's all about doing the best you can do, yeah. Anything can and will be leaked

looks can be deceiving. the furthest I've gone operating system wise is set up Linux Mint and Slax Linux in a virtual machine (used both for about a day each)
Nah I don’t blame you though, you have to be quite the masochist to use Linux. Obfuscating is the best approach with your privacy instead of going 100% private in this day and age.

I've heard some people saying Tor itself isn't even secure because of government actors and malicious people setting up their own nodes to de encrypt people. Gotta self host everything nowadays, I suspect setting up your own network routing to go through your own personal nodes would be quite the task though, especially maintaining them at various locations.

Yes the CIA got caught hosting up to around 100-1000 nodes TLDR, super scary shit. I’m pretty sure Tor itself has ties to Israel I’ve heard in some form, honestly wouldn’t surprise me, Israel also have connections to matrix (another protocol for private messaging as you probably know).

Self-hosting is all you have left now, can be expensive hence privacy obfuscation is the best approach you have these days.

I’m going to bed now by the way since it’s very late, nice speaking to you though. Take care of yourself.

Thoughts on getting Russian networking services? They are very unlikely to give up your information depending on who is looking for you. Of course that's an issue of them using your data in their jurisdiction as well, but yk.

Hence why privacy obfuscation is your best bet with your privacy in this day and age, nothing fullproof in this so called liassez-faire world

The best thing I did for my security was dropping Windows altogether. Microsoft are pieces of shit.

LibreWolf and Tor are awesome and I use both of them.

For security based operating systems for those who are curious, I suggest Tails for 'beginners' and/or QubesOS for more experienced users.

OpenSnitch is a very good app. I think it's Linux only but I don't recall. I like having the option to approve/deny all of the connections.

I also suggest using masked credit cards and/or PayPal when purchasing stuff on the internet. Should also use masked generated emails whenever possible, too. Always use a randomly generated password (non debatable !) and use two-step whenever possible. I use BitWarden for my login storage. Google Auth has syncing but BitWarden also provides twostep token storage.

Proton VPN is a pretty good free VPN service if you want a VPN but don't want to pay.

For messages, Telegram is pretty good. I use ThunderBird for emails because it's PGP supported.

I have way more but I can't think of any at the moment. I'll share them here if I can think of anything else.
random I never knew u were so schitzo

Alternative title: schizomaxxing 101 for dumbies

Here's some resources to help you protect your privacy on your PC if you so wish to.

For Windows 10 (bare in mind there is still some spyware installed on Windows you can't disable):

1. https://github.com/Sycnex/Windows10Debloater

GOATed, dead easy script you can run to 'despook' and debloat your Windows 10 install to clear out telemetry (spyware) and bloatware packaged into your Windows 10 install by Microsoft.

Run Windows Powershell as Administrator and copy and paste the following to download and run the script: iwr -useb https://git.io/debloat|iex

2. https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10

Can be used for 10 and 11, good piece of software to disable telemetry however the code is propietary, so you don't know what the code can do.

Recommended Linux Distros for newbies who are schizo enough (learning curve but highly beneficial for privacy):

1. Linux Mint - https://www.linuxmint.com/

Recommended for Windows users coming over. Ubuntu based, stable, however it's stable package base comes at a cost of being able to access the latest up-to-date software for the most part.

2. EndeavourOS - https://endeavouros.com/

Arch-based, dead easy to install without the hassle of installing vanilla Arch whilst basically being as close to vanilla Arch as possible. It's package base is 'bleeding edge', meaning software is the most up-to-date you can get it to be, however sacrificing stability.

Recommended browsers for privacy (could add more here but don't want it to get too complicated):

1. LibreWolf - https://librewolf.net/

Fork of Firefox, pretty much makes Firefox as private as you can get it to be off the bat. You can mess with user.js scripts and other extensions for firefox but for the sake of convenience I'm recommending this.

2. Tor -
Water of course. Recommended if you want to go on the Dark web (jfl), can also be used for the clear web as well but may be slower, you also can't install other extensions (to make your digital fringerprint blend in better and allat), thus I recommend LibreWolf for use on the clear web.

Recommended use case in terms OSes on your PC:

Dual-boot Linux and Windows (water). Linux is good once you get your head around it but for convenience keep Windows around also, you never know when you might need it for apps which require it and don't run well in WINE on Linux.

I could add more here but this thread is long enough, alas what I provided is still useful and a good starting point for protecting your privacy on your PC.

wow I didn't know you were this knowledgeable with computers 😯 I also dual boot windows and linux since I still can't play some of my games on Linux 😩
