Isn't Mullvad just Tor minus the network and blatantness? Would be the best arguably
Yeah Mullvad is arguably the best you can get at the minute, both Proton and Mullvad though are still ‘spooky’ as both have been shown to do sketchy stuff (Mullvad and Proton keeping logs and in the case of Proton helped the government bust a climate change rally and arrest those organising it), honestly these days your better off just self hosting shit if your that spooked out (which is horribly unideal, but possible).

I only recall proton doing that. Swedish authorities searched Mullvad and found no logs if i remember. Maybe it's different with the browser. No VPN is going to given anonymity anyways

I’m actually looking to self host a XMPP client for messages, if I actually solve how to do so holy moly the GC is never getting leaked again

Next step: getting someone to actually do all that shit to message you back. Messages are already pretty secure anyways, as long as e2ee, the main issue is with the entire system being breached in that scenario. Email is impossible to be secure though, only way to privately use email is to use a provider and sign up through Tor

Oh right, I recall something how Mullvad keeps logs in the background by some guy showing so on YouTube ages ago, but it has been a while. I still think VPNs can be useful to potentially mitigate your traffic (OPSEC and all that), but of course by no means foolproof.

Only useful for hiding from your ISP and obscuring Geolocation but still pretty useful nonetheless

I mean honestly to be fair the most secure way to talk to someone is literally face to face, even then you still have to make sure the other person keeps it confidential. I suppose 100% privacy is pretty much impossible, but of course I believe you should do your best to protect it as I believe our shit is our shit if you know what I mean, no one else’s.

Man you’re a smart guy, you know about this lingo more than I do hands down. Props.

It's all about doing the best you can do, yeah. Anything can and will be leaked

looks can be deceiving. the furthest I've gone operating system wise is set up Linux Mint and Slax Linux in a virtual machine (used both for about a day each)
Nah I don’t blame you though, you have to be quite the masochist to use Linux. Obfuscating is the best approach with your privacy instead of going 100% private in this day and age.

I've heard some people saying Tor itself isn't even secure because of government actors and malicious people setting up their own nodes to de encrypt people. Gotta self host everything nowadays, I suspect setting up your own network routing to go through your own personal nodes would be quite the task though, especially maintaining them at various locations.

Yes the CIA got caught hosting up to around 100-1000 nodes TLDR, super scary shit. I’m pretty sure Tor itself has ties to Israel I’ve heard in some form, honestly wouldn’t surprise me, Israel also have connections to matrix (another protocol for private messaging as you probably know).

Self-hosting is all you have left now, can be expensive hence privacy obfuscation is the best approach you have these days.

I’m going to bed now by the way since it’s very late, nice speaking to you though. Take care of yourself.

Thoughts on getting Russian networking services? They are very unlikely to give up your information depending on who is looking for you. Of course that's an issue of them using your data in their jurisdiction as well, but yk.

Holy fuck I forgot about Proton doing that.

Hence why privacy obfuscation is your best bet with your privacy in this day and age, nothing fullproof in this so called liassez-faire world
