From a purely physical standpoint, Homo sapiens underwent a process called “self domestication." Over time, we selected mates who were cooperative and friendly rather than aggressively dominant.
We lost the heavy, intimidating brow ridges of our ancestors. Our faces became softer, our heads rounder, and our features more juvenile (neoteny) In early Homo sapiens, physical traits like facial symmetry, clear skin, and clear eyes became highly sought after because they were direct biological indicators of a strong immune system, parasite resistance, and fertility. We evolved to look less intimidating and more communicative (which is also why we have visible whites in our eye, so people know what we are looking at).

it seems like we became more aesthetically pleasing to ourselves over time as a result of that selection process. not just for mating though - our neoteny and "cute" features probably also helped us communicate better as a species which is why it stuck around. makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint
