Should you compliment someone when they compliment you?

I feel like its basic but,
whenever I compliment someone I don’t expect it back because im complimenting them not to be nice but genuinely telling them what I like about them

i usually dont compliment back because i dont wanna lie, unless i already had something i couldnt say

But i feel like it seems rude

if someone irl compliments me i automatically begin comparing us tbh. If I find something better than my corresponding feature, or I just subjectively like them, I compliment back otherwise I just say thank you.

Yeah its nice if you get complimented back but if youre the one complimenting you shouldnt expect one back

I usually just do it out of habit but they aren't very thought through I usually just repeat what they said to me
