I can't tell when people are joking most of the time over text, but my instinct is to ignore it in hopes I find out eventually if it was a joke or not lmfao. Normally people mention the same subject like 50+ different times so I end up finding out eventually.

A lot of context is lost over text. Can't see your face, can't hear your voice/tone/infliction, can't hear the pausing between words, and all of this other stuff. Normally people can tell what's a joke and isn't a joke by having history with the person making the joke (knowing what kinds of jokes they'd make) and/or by the way the sentence is structured, but if you're autistic that becomes more difficult because you take things literally.

But it's normal to be frustrated by it, because communication is all we have on the internet. It's sometimes hard to explain something in depth when you just made the comment in passing.
