On .org there is way more users and the mods are inundated with requests

It was never a "feature", if it was a feature then you would have a built-in feature that allowed you to do it yourself (which is built-in to XenForo by default). It was done out of the kindness for users because it takes 0 effort to delete them.

why

There was no upside to allowing users to do it, only downsides.

• Users were using it to manipulate post/rep ratios (which is gay and lame to do),
• users would post something that didn't get the reaction they wanted (as in they would delete threads out of embarrassment or when they didn't get a positive response),
• users were using it as a way to bypass the "no mass deletions" rule (Dean has never allowed users to mass delete their own threads),
• it takes context from other threads (users will make response threads to certain threads, or refer to other threads)...
