For those who don’t know what “Designer Babies” are, in a nutshell, they’re infants whose genetic makeup has been artificially selected/altered as embryos to ensure they possess specific traits.
Sounds cool

This causes a serious ethical issue . It falls into eugenics . Since it is not necessary it will just make the gap between the rich and the poor even bigger . On top of being born with a gold spoon in their mouths they willbe perfect too . It also could lead to transhumanism really fast .

I feel like the humans imperfection has to be untouched . And the ethical comitees will never accept this in our time

true on the latter
but the technology will still exist i suppose people will eventually start using it.
though i dont know how it can be moderated

I get the concern, but shouldn't we use this for medical necessity? I say, if we can prevent a child from suffering through a life-altering disorder like BPD, that feels like a win to me tbh. But again, I think the main issue would be setting hard legal boundaries so it’s only used for health, not for creating “genetically superior” babies/humans.

Don't we alredy commit eugenics without wanting to? Why people with down syndrome or that are very short usually don't pass down their genes? That's a form of eugenics caused by society.

this already exists tho it's prenatal screening . Docs can see if the kid has down syndrome or missing limbs and will tell you to abort if you want . Also for rare diseases they do a genetic screening of both parents if one of them has it.

But that’s exactly why I think we need strict rules. Humans are already biased, so we shouldn't have a “remote control” to edit those biases into our DNA. Only for medical necessity, not social standards.

If you are in this forum I'm sure you know how harsh social standards are and how some people end up killing themselves because of not being able to fit in. Gene editing could fix that.

the only reason problem is for poor people that cant afford it tho

But again, like @cckstacy said, this becomes eugenics for the rich, gives wealthy kids x2 advantage, money, and perfect genes. This would push society into transhumanism, quickly.

perhaps there is a fix as to a more equal distribution of wealth

if it is given to everyone then sure but it clearly won't even in coutries where healthcare is free

mogs

Poor people can't efford good education either or the best diets or the best teachers to learn from them. There will always be a gap with our current economic system, and if gene editing reduces the suffering in some and makes their life better then I don't see why not.

they will suffer more
well in the end the rich already can afford more stuff like plastic surgery better diets etc

Right, but it only widens the gap between the rich and poor. If only rich people can afford to edit their kids, it won't just be about money anymore—it will be biological. The rich would be born superior/healthier, while the poor is stuck with the genetic lottery.

sadly
but thats already somewhat the case now
the only fix i see is personally a more equal distribution of wealth or making this more accessible

I’m doing ts so my kid can be chad if I can’t

Agreed, but I doubt that’ll be in our lifetime.
the thing is that we can do it , but there are too many rules about research on embryos it is even forbidden in most coutries . I advise you go read some articles about it , it's super intresting

Will do.

I know but we gotta end suffering once and for all, maybe first reduce the gap between rich and the poor, then incorporate eugenics
