initially I wasn't a fan of how it tries to paint christianity as something opressive.

But in reality this isn't what Atwood was trying to do.

It is clear that Gilead is a criticism of massive religous insitutions used as an excuse to control people. Such as the catholic church.

I think that there are some narrative choices that are hit or miss, for example I don't find the locations she paints to be particulary interesting. But all around it is definitely a well written, rich novel.
