I never finished it, because I wanted to see if my opinion would change after I finish the book. I’m on Chapter 12, and I hope to see others opinion to possibly give myself another viewpoint.

Just because the pov characters are scout and Jem doesn’t mean their story is the main plot

We’re using their pov to view racism, I love it because of how naive they are

8/10 for me

Why do you believe so?
6'2 african/indian guy would be treated better than a 5'6 white guys. There's too much stigma against white people even in white countries who never participated in imperial oppression of ethnics. Take an example of Scandinavians. I would say racism but against whites.

Maybe my thoughts will change as I keep reading. I honestly see why you say this, because I thought racism was meant to be that main structure around this book.

As I keep reading, I keep finding myself going back to the thought of how this should not be the only book we have to depict racism.

Of course there’s many different aspects other than racism though.

Racism towards white people is often a topic of debate.

Iqlet. It always gets dismissed
Iqlet for mentioning how it is a topic of debate? I never gave my stance or said what the opposing arguments were.

Please be more thoughtful with your words, and stop resorting to insults.

Well the biggest thing abt this book is how the narrator is a child and children (at the time) didn’t understand racism. So it was basically an unbiased view of racism

That’s my biggest issue with this book being the only book about racism presented to us.

Because she doesn’t understand, and when you don’t understand, you don’t actually see the harm. You just know it’s harmful.

Breaking down the book with the class is great n’ all. Maybe my expectations were different than what was presented in front of me. 😢

It’s not the only book abt racism. Maybe for youth (I read it last year in middle school) but there are many authors with the same unbiased view. Less abt story telling and more serious stuff

Ah, when I say the only book about racism I mean the only one we will be reading in my class. Haha, sorry. I’m a freshman, so maybe when I get older there will be more books!

yeah when I read it I expected more about racism
I think the main theme is that people are complex and heavily impacted by their surroundings and upbringing. no one is completely "good" or "bad" and we should have empathy
I think having kids as the main characters was clever. I liked the part where Scout casually talked to Mr. Cunningham in the mob and made him rethink his actions
it's 1 am for me I can't think right either lol

Yes, and I really…dislike that part? I mean I agree that people are complex, but there are people whose negatives completely outweigh their positives. Eventually it’s no longer about you being a complex human because this is how you chose to behave.

I havent gotten to that part yet!

Then you kind of dislike the book in general. That's the theme that almost everything in the book revolves around.
Maybe. I have not finished it yet. I like how it shows the innocence of children but I’d prefer that to be a side story rather than that be the big idea.

Aghhh, I’m so confused on my thoughts. I hate English class! 😩

that's true. a lot of people are just genuinely bad people and don't care enough to change. I appreciate how it wasn't just "racism bad" though, and the characters have their own backstories and personalities. I remember enjoying the class discussions when we read it in school

sorry my bad

i havent formed an entire opinion yet. And im clinging on to hope that ill find some aspects interesting.
sorry my bad
It’s okay!

honestly wonderfully ironic because this is exactly like real life. racism is just a subplot irl. not sure if thats intentional in the writing but it can be interpreted that way. the subplot of racism in the novel parallels the subplot of racism irl
