Most of us are familiar with the common ratios to judge attractiveness (gonial angle, facial thirds, eye separation ratio), but if those ratios are off how do we determine the reason?

One way is to establish measurement ranges for the things that contribute to these ratios to establish where someone falls short. For example if someone has an ESR that’s too high is it because their inter pupillary distance is too high OR is it because their byzgomatic distance is too low? Having established ranges helps figure this out.

The first thing to do is find out your inter pupillary distance, as once you know this you can use it to figure out all other measurements from a photo. DON’T try and measure this yourself, you can under/overestimate by up to 0.5cm which makes the rest pointless. Most basic eye tests should measure IPD so go to your optometrist and make a note of this figure.

I’ve worked out all these measurements assuming an IPD of 65mm. Using the average IPD of 64mm tends to produce well… average measurements. A *slightly* larger than normal IPD is preferred.

--------

IPD and byzgomatic width assuming an ESR between 44.3 – 47.4 (ideal of 46%)
IPD: 6.26 – 6.7cm, ideal 6.5cm
Byzgomatic Width: 13.71 – 14.67cm, ideal 14.13cm

Height portion of FWHR assuming an FWHR of 1.9 – 2.06 (ideal of 1.98), and facial width of 14.13cm
Bottom of eyebrow to top of lips: 6.86 – 7.44cm, ideal 7.14cm

Facial height assuming total FWHR of 1.33 – 1.38 (ideal of 1.35), and facial width of 14.13cm
Facial height: 18.79 – 19.5cm, ideal of 19.08cm

Facial thirds assuming thirds between 29.5 – 36.5 (ideal 33/33/34), and facial height of 19.08cm
Facial thirds: 5.63 – 6.96cm, ideal 6.3 / 6.3 / 6.49

Upper/lower lip height assuming total lip height around 25% of lower third, and upper/lower lip ratio of 1.4 – 2 (ideal 1.7)
Top lip: 0.54 – 0.68cm, ideal 0.6cm
Bottom lip: 0.94 – 1.08cm, ideal 1.02cm

Chin/philtrum assuming lower third of 6.49cm minus lip height of 1.62cm, and chin to philtrum ratio of 2.05 – 2.55 (ideal 2.3)
Chin height: 3.27 – 3.5cm, ideal 3.39cm
Philtrum height: 1.37 – 1.6cm, ideal 1.48cm

Eye dimensions assuming eye aspect ratio of 2.8 – 3.6 (ideal 3.25), eye spacing of 1:1 and IPD of 65mm
Eye height: 0.9 – 1.16cm, ideal 1cm
Eye width: 2.8 – 3.6cm, ideal 3.25cm

Bigonial width assuming 85.5 – 92% of byzgomatic width (ideal 89%)
Bigonial width: 12.08 – 13cm, ideal 12.58cm

Haven’t yet been able to figure out reliable ranges for nose height + width and mouth width
