Why do already tan people do this to their skin on purpose?

she could If she used a bit of spf.
Last year I used a spray with only spf 15 and got no burning and I am a fair skinned girl, unlike her.
My point was that she was naturally tan so she doesn't need any. It doesn't even suit her colouring and it looks like it is too much. Her natural tan is enough
