Why do people lie about their height so much?

I'm 6'1", and I was talking to this dude, abt same height as my dad (5'10.5"), and he claimed 6'2". Another time a dude claimed 5'6" and was as tall as my GF (She's 5'2"). Do they not know everyone can tell?
