It exists mostly about wealth and status, women care about that way disproportionally than men do and marry up in terms of someone with a higher income.
To men looks matter more than wealth and status but its similar to how much looks matter in women. So men marry up in looks and women marry up in income but also care about looks, which even though is roughly a symmetrical amount to how much men care about looks, since they also care about status disproportionally thats why marriage is hypergamous.
