It’s something you probably don’t think about (pun intended) but have u ever stopped to question who is sending thoughts onto ur head at all times?

Ofc there are some occasions where you voluntarily think about something, being trying to remember or even solve a problem

But 90% of ur daily thoughts are random and seem to drastically change ur mood with no initiative from urself

Makes u question just how in control you are of ur own mind?

The fact that something that isn’t you can just randomly throw bad, good or random shit into ur head without any conscious effort seems strange and creepy when u actually think about it

If you try rn to just turn off ur phone and sit in silence in a quiet room you’ll notice ur mind will very soon start to throw in random paranoia, memory, feelings, worry etc all without ur consent
This happens when my phone dies

have you read the untethered soul?

it covers this concept really well - 10/10 would recommend

It becomes noticeable then but what makes free will even more questionable is when u consider most of our life is dictated by the way we feel

If u feel good your day will be much different than when u feel bad

So when ur mind seems to decide on its own how it wants to feel, are u really in control of urself or are u closer to being just a spectator with no real say of ur actions but only the illusion of it

Hi

Consciousness doesn't exist in the traditional sense. Likewise, our thoughts don't exist in the traditional sense, they are just electrical signals influenced by the environment and brain chemistry. You are truly not in control.

Just a creepy concept things like this or the brain signalling decisions you will make milliseconds before you are conscious you’re even gonna make that decision just makes it all feel closer to a VR movie than actual freedom on a body

I made a thread about this on my alt:

I honestly wish I had something else to blame my thoughts on lol

I'm not sure if I experience 'automatic' thoughts. My head is either completely empty, only processing sensory information (like sight/hearing/etc) with no further thoughts or I'm having an intentional thought. I don't normally get random memories or anything, but rarely occasionally I do, and I think that's the most 'automatic' part of my brain. I don't have dreams either, for some reason. Everything I do is very intentional, even when I don't always want it to be.

It's possible I've experienced them previously, but that I've been on medication for a long time that I don't really recall it anymore. I think it was the automatic thoughts that made me suicidal, now that I'm thinking about it. I think the 'numb' feeling people experience on medicine is probably just not having automatic thoughts anymore and that stresses them out, but I obviously can't say for sure.

It's weird to think about, I guess.

I mean the uncomfortable truth is that ur brain is split in 2 and ur not the one with full control of it yet you think u are

Kinda like 2 ppl controlling u at the same time while u are the one with control of what u physically do and can even think there’s another you in control of ur mood and thoughts and that second you can influence ur actions through how u feel even tho they can’t make u do something they can manipulate u into it

Ye it's not my actions I care about just my thoughts

If that’s true ur 1 in a billion since most ppl find it impossible to just sit there and experience actually being in the place for more than 10 seconds without some random shit coming up in their head

That’s why many try meditation but even then it doesn’t make ur head fully empty at all times unless u willingly want to think

I sincerely don't know the last time I've ever had something randomly pop up in my head. Even with the 'random' memories I very rarely have, they're never truly random; I did or said something that triggered the memory, and that's more of a memory processing thing than what I assume you're referring to.

I'm assuming I do experience them, but just that I never processed them in the way people describe it, and so it's possible I'm misunderstanding what an automatic thought is meant to be.

If you to sit in silence and had a random thought, what kind of thought is it? Is it like "oh I forgot to do the laundry" or is it like "why are cats orange"? Or can it be either any given time? Is it something completely different?

To me, when I sit in silence, I'm only processing what I'm looking at (or another sensory thing). So it's 'empty' and I don't consciously experience anything, but I'm obviously assuming if I looked at my cat my brain obviously processes it as my cat. I'm assuming that's a memory processing thing that runs in the background of my brain, but I'm not consciously having the thought that it's my cat... unless I wanted to, I guess. But if I gave that unconscious thought no further mind, then my brain just moved onto whatever else I'm looking at.

These random thoughts like say u willingly decided today ur gonna relax and u lay down and worries about ur debt suddenly come up

Or even for bped ppl comes something else that’s overthinking interactions every time

Things that if u could chose you wouldn’t voluntarily think about but seem to come in unsolicited

If you were to do it in the dark + silence do you think it would be the same?

true sometimes u get these unwanted thoughts and u have to make a rational conscious effort to go back to thinking the way U want.

Problem of consciousness. Nobody really knows yet.

I saw an interesting analogy in relation to this once. When you see a bird flying, do you question where flying comes from? Probably not. As flying is not created nor taking up space in the bird...it is simply what it is doing.

+ The brain is consistently active matter. The thoughts we consider "random" are likely a bunch of connections being made unconsciously.

I'm honestly not sure. If I willingly decided to relax, and I laid down, I would have to view my phone and view my bank accounts before I had a thought about my financial situation. Like normally something needs to trigger it first.

I guess in most people's cases, most people are experiencing a trigger of some kind - probably emotionally. I'm not sure what would trigger the emotion or thought in this case, though.

If you were to do it in the dark + silence do you think it would be the same?
That's a good question. Normally I would be thinking about something intentionally, but my thoughts would remain consistent - as in I don't jump subject to subject in my head unless it's somehow relevant.

If I was going to bed, and I saw the kitchen was dirty, I would lay in silence and darkness processing that the bed feels a certain way or that I hear the fan, while intentionally thinking about what in the kitchen I would want to clean tomorrow morning. Then after I'm done thinking about it, it's empty again and I'm just subconsciously processing the sensory of my bed. That's an intentional thought that eventually ends, and I don't think about anything until the next morning.
