Acne scars

Getting rid of acne scars can take time, but there are various treatments that may help reduce their appearance. Here are some common approaches:

1.

  • Retinoids: These can help promote skin cell turnover and fade scars over time.
  • Vitamin C: Known for its skin-brightening properties, it can reduce discoloration and improve skin texture.
  • Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs): These exfoliate the skin and may help in fading scars by removing dead skin cells.
  • Silicone Gel Sheets or Silicone Cream: Often recommended for raised scars, they can flatten and smooth the skin.

2.

A dermatologist can perform a chemical peel using stronger acids to remove the top layers of skin, which may help fade scars.

3.

This involves tiny needles creating micro-injuries to the skin to stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture.

4.

Lasers like fractional CO2 or erbium laser can target deeper layers of the skin and encourage collagen production, reducing the appearance of scars.

5.

For certain types of scars, like hypertrophic or keloid scars, corticosteroid injections can help flatten them.

6.

  • Aloe Vera: Known for its soothing properties, it may help in reducing scar visibility.
  • Honey: Some people find honey helpful for healing and reducing inflammation in scars.

7.

It's crucial to wear sunscreen daily, as sun exposure can darken scars, making them more noticeable.

Always consult with a dermatologist to discuss your options and find the best treatment for your skin type and scar severity.

Retinoids are easy to get a hold of. TheOrdinary has actually released a pretty decent guide here. They also have different options where a lot of other brands only gives you a single option for retinoids. If you live where a CVS is, they have one called 'CVS Health Refining Retinol Serum' that I heard is pretty good and mild on the skin. It's a bit cheaper than a lot of brands I've seen and is easy to access. People always suggests the TheOrdinary brand though.
