August is the eighth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. Its length is 31 days.

In the Northern Hemisphere, August is a summer month, and it's generally considered late summer.

By the calendar (meteorological seasons):

June = early summer
July = midsummer
August = late summer

By the astronomical seasons:

Summer begins around June 20–21 (the summer solstice).
Summer ends around September 22–23 (the autumnal equinox).

So on August 5, it's still solidly summer, though many people think of August as the beginning of late summer because days are gradually getting shorter and the transition toward fall has begun.

If you're in the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are reversed, so August is a winter month.
