We are not meant to see this much beauty
We live in a world where we are constantly bombarded with images of beautiful people. From social media, to porn, to television, to movies, to advertisements, we are exposed to more attractive faces than ever before. But what effect does this have on our perception of beauty and our relationships with others?
The concept
According to a theory of sensory adaptation, our brain adjusts to the level of stimulation we receive from the environment. This means that when we see something very often, we become less sensitive to it and need more of it to feel the same level of satisfaction. This applies to many sensory experiences, such as temperature, taste, weight, and also beauty.
Douglas T. Kenrick, a psychology professor from Arizona State University, conducted a series of experiments to test how exposure to beauty affects our judgments of attractiveness. He found that when people were shown a series of unusually beautiful women, they rated an average-looking woman as less attractive than when they were shown a series of average-looking women. He also found that both men and women overestimated the frequency of gorgeous women in the crowds, but not of handsome men.
Negative consequences ?
This concept suggests that this phenomenon of beauty overstimulation has negative consequences for both sexes, albeit different ones for women than for men. For men, being exposed to too many beautiful women may make them dissatisfied with their current or potential partners, and lower their commitment and loyalty. For women, being exposed to too many beautiful women may make them feel insecure about their own appearance, and increase their anxiety and depression( obvious blackpill )
Our brain is not adapted to the modern world, where we have access to unlimited images of beauty. He says that our brain evolved to make us aware of opportunities and threats while looking for mates in a world where beauty was scarce and indicative of health and fertility. But in today’s world, beauty is abundant and artificial(makeup and hardmaxxing) , it is easy to use deception in order to hide one's genetic failures nowdays ..
