Your bones have cells called osteocytes which sense mechanical stimuli, when they sense a lot of stimuli they secrete WNT/b-catenin, PGE2 & nitric oxide which ALL boost bone growth locally.

When you arent active, these same osteocytes secrete sclerostin, which inhibits wnt/b-catenin. The sensor responsible for communicating mechanical stimuli to these osteocyte cells is called integrin alpha 5 and an interesting study was done on this receptor.

Mice who got their integrin alpha 5 deactivated got less bone growth from mechanical loading compared to mice who still had this receptor. If you dont move a lot during puberty especially, you are essentially recreating this; no mechanical loading -> iAlpha5 doesnt get activated -> osteocytes secrete sclerostin -> wnt/b-catenin gets inhibited -> less growth

Goes to show how important it is to be active, get sunlight, go swim, play sports.

I made this myself btw
