i'm sure you have heard about the term "raw milk" over the past month if you've been on the primal diet/blackpill niche of tiktok or other social media platforms. you've also probably heard names/edits of people that you dont know such as Goatis, Paul Saladino and Aajonus Vonderplanitz promoting the consumption of raw milk.

raw milk, as you may have heard is unpasteurized milk, many believe that it is more organic and nutritious, while others speculate that it has more harmful bacteria that may make people more prone to diseases. This thread will delve into both the benefits and flaws of drinking raw milk. (I will refer to official PubMed studies)

starting off, pasteurization is the killing of bacteria and microorganisms in raw milk through a temporary heating process. Meaning before pasteurization became common, contaminated milk frequently transmitted diseases. After the introduction of pasteurization about 100 years ago it had greatly reduced milk related illnesses. (PMID: 27340300)

supporters of raw milk suggest that non pasteurization can help retain its organic health benefits, and according to them the taste is often tastier, less processed feeling and has a much more creamier texture. It is true that pasteurization can remove some heat sensitive vitamins which reduces the nutritional content and value of the raw milk, but the difference between non and raw milk is negligible, which belittles Goatis' main claim against pasteurization (PMID: 31770653). Some observational studies show that children raised on farms that consume raw milk often had lower rates of asthma, allergies, and respiratory infections, however the studies don't prove whether this was caused entirely by raw milk or whether it was lifestyle and other factors that play in.
(PMID: 25441645)

nevertheless, raw milk can contain bacteria such as Campylobacter, Salmonella, E coli, and Listeria. The milk can be contaminated by the cow itself, the equipment, or the farm environment. this does not mean every batch is contaminated. (PMID: 15992306) From 2013 to 2018, US researchers recorded 75 raw milk out breaks that had caused 675 illnesses, and majority of it had affected citizens below 20. (PMID: 36280604) To top it off, a small controlled study found that raw milk did not improve lactose digestion compared to pasteurized milk. (PMID: 24615309)

overall, raw milk may contain some nutritional benefits that aid with reduced allergy or respiratory infections, however its risk of bacteria contamination is well documented. Future research could investigate preserving the benefits of raw milk, while also maintaining the safety of pasteurized milk.
