Cortisol is a catabolic hormone used for many reasons in your body to maintain life; it breaks more complex substances down into simpler ones with the release of energy. For example during energy it can promote the breakdown of body fat to utilize triglyceride substrates thus providing you energy while you go on your run. The point being it is not to be demonized and is a normal part of your body.
However, nowadays there's so much overstimulating bullshit that creeps into people's heads, heads that have not matured enough, gained enough mindfulness, enlightenment, etc, in which these individuals cause themselves to stress and suffer more than they need to leading to chronically high levels of cortisol.
This is very dangerous and I have had my own experiences with this. Chronically high cortisol levels can (and have cause me to):
1.) Suppression of anabolic hormones including growth hormone, testosterone, and insulin like growth factors.
2.) Inflammation (and thus pain) in injuries leading to delayed healing times.
3.) High blood pressure; hypertension.
4.) A Decrease muscle protein synthesis and increase visceral fat storage (the fat around your organs that is generally deemed more dangerous for your health). In basic terms less muscle growth potential for you, and more fat gain for you.
5.) And the obvious mental picture: you just feel like shit all the time.
In Kindergarden terms: Cortisol=stress. Stress is bad. We need to get rid of stress to feel better.
Advice is to incorporate 5 minutes of meditation daily, backed by research to improve cognitive abillity and awareness among other things - search for relevant studies on pubmed and google scholar if you question my claim. In addition get more high quality sleep, destroy problems in your life (they're not going to just go away, they will haunt you forever until you kill them), long term adaptogens like 600mg of ashwaghanda k66 daily help marginally, avoiding overtraining in the gym and sports (Goggins type mentality individuals: chill out a little.), and lastly destroying your piece of shit addictions leading to shit self perception, image, altered dopamine and opioid release in your reward system, etc. Hmm what could that possibly be? Maybe your piece of shit gambling addiction. Or porn addiction. Or Alcohol addiction. Or smoking issue. Or your habit to lie. Your habit to talk behind other peoples backs. Wtv. it's going to take some self reflection.
Best,
