What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a form of exfoliation that is similar to microdermabrasion. Using a blade, it gently removes hairs and thin outer layers of skin. The “shaving” of the face triggers the process of cell regeneration and helps improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation or acne scarring. By shaving the skin’s surface, the top layer of dead skin is removed as well as fine vellus hair (aka peach fuzz). The result is a smoother appearance and a radiant glow, which allows products to better absorb into the skin and makeup to apply and set more evenly.
What Products Do You Need?
The steps are as follows:
Step 1: Cleanse
Use a gentle cleanser and clean your skin thoroughly before patting it dry to avoid bacteria getting into your skin.
Step 2: Lubricate
The usual standard practice is applying a thin layer of cleansing or facial oil to the skin being treated so that your blade glides smoothly through your skin without leaving cuts. Alternatively, if you have extra sensitive skin and/or don’t have any oil, you can use a thin layer of aloe vera gel.
Step 3: Shave
Pull your skin upward until it’s taut, then hold the dermaplane razor at a 45-degree angle. Make short downward strokes against the skin and be sure to shave ALONG the growth direction of your hair/peach fuzz, not opposite. Ensure the blade is as parallel to the skin as possible while still angled enough to shave, to avoid cutting your skin.
Step 4: Aftercare
Wait 5 minutes for your skin to calm down, then wash your face once more with the gentle cleanser used earlier. Once your face is washed and dry, apply a hydrating toner or aloe vera gel. Avoid heavy creams, acids, and retinols/retinoids for 24 hours after treatment to not irritate the skin or risk breakouts.
