Those shells that most of us throw away every day are actually one of the purest sources of calcium, the body's most essential building block. Before chasing after expensive supplements, we need to learn how to properly utilize this natural resource we have
Pasture-raised
If possible, use pasture-raised eggs. Studies published on platforms like PubMed and ResearchGate confirm that the calcium crystal structure in the shells of chickens exposed to sunlight and fed naturally is much denser and of higher quality than those from industrially raised chickens
Drying & Sterilization
You shouldn't leave the peels damp after boiling. Moisture is an invitation for bacteria to grow
Baking: Spread the crusts on a baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 100-120°C (approximately 210-250°F) for 10-15 minutes
This process not only kills any remaining microbes, but it also makes the shells more fragile, allowing them to be powdered much more easily
Caution: Try not to burn the shells our aim is simply to remove all the moisture inside and make them crispy
The husks cannot be ground properly if they are not completely dry
Shells that are not ground finely enough can cause internal bleeding or constipation
Natural Fertilizer
If you are meeting your calcium needs in other ways, or if you don't want to bother with the preparation process, never throw these husks away. The safest and most efficient use for them is in your garden
Eggshells are an excellent source of calcium for the soil, allowing your plants to absorb more nutrients
Strengthens the root structure of calcium loving plants such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants, and improves fruit quality
Animal Nutrition
Eggshells are a powerful source of minerals not only for humans but also for pets. However, even though their digestive systems work differently than ours, the same safety precautions apply
