this is a comprehensive guide covering everything u need to know about freckles, including:
- natural freckles
- cosmetic freckles
- myths and mistakes
- longevity and aftercare

what are freckles?

differences between freckles (ephelides) and sunspots (lentigines):
Both are influenced by sunglight, but ephelides are mainly genetic and become more visible with sun exposure while lentigines are caused by long term sun exposure and skin damage

genetics (such as variants in MC1R gene)
When MC1R functions normally, it produces protective dark eumelanin. variants that reduce its actuvity increase pheomelanin, leading to freckles, fair skin and red hair

why some fade in winter and others dont
freckles fade in winter because they rely on UV rays to produce pigment, whereas sunspots are permanent skin damage hence they do not fade

do freckles affect attractiveness?

beauty standards over time
in recent years, freckles have become more increasingly desirable as beauty standards have shifted to a more natural and low maintenance look

cultural perceptions
historically, freckles were associated with low status and considered unattractive. today, freckles are not only embraced but also a beauty standard

how freckles influence first impressions
freckles are perceived positively in social interactions, they give us the impression that a person has spent a considerable amount of time in the sun which is a desirable trait in the western lifestyle

natural freckles
how UV exposure influences existing freckles
UV exposure acts as a direct trigger for existing freckles and causes them to darken and multiply. when skin encounters uv light, melanocytes produce melanin as a protective response

risk of intentionally tanning or seeking UV exposure
UV exposure damages skin DNA, leading to breakdown of collagen and premature aging. freckles indicate that your skin is highly sensitive to sun, which leads to an extreme risk of melanoma (skin cancer)

cosmetic freckles
henna

henna freckles are a semi permanent method that give you a natural, sun kissed freckle effect lasting 3-7 days. henna dots are applied across the cheeks and nose, left to sit for 1-2 hours, then removed, developing into soft brown freckles in 1-2 days

freckle pen
freckle pens have fine brush applicators that let you dot on tiny and assymetrical constellations, which is optimal if you only want freckles for a few hours

freckles tattoo
a cosmetic procedure where freckles are tattooed onto your face, taking 1-2 hours and lasts for 1-3 years before fading. after the session the freckles can appear dark, they get softer as they heal

makeup
an angled brush with brown eyeshadow and setting spray or an eyebrow pencil will do the same job as a freckle pen, recommended if you want a quick application

longevity and safety
makeup- lasts 12-24 hours and can be extended using setting powder, very safe but beware of expired products
henna- 3-7 days, depending on your skin and the product used. ALWAYS use a natural and chemical free henna
tattoo- 1-3 years, carries risks of infection, pigmentation migration and allergies. its also difficult and expensive to reverse

removal
sunscreen to reduce darkening

to stop existing freckles from darkening and multiplying, you need a suncreen with SPF-50 or higher

topical fading products
topical fading products work by inhibiting melanin production and increasing the cell turnover to lighten hyperpigmentation, such as retinoids, azelaic acid, kojic acid, niacinamide etc, make sure to pair them with sunscreen

laser treatment
laser freckle treatments use light focused energy to target excess melanin causing the pigment to fade in 5-10 days which requires 1-3 sessions, this is ideal because treated freckles do not return, however more can come if you dont use sun protection

common myths
“freckles mean skin damage”

no freckles don’t mean skin damage, they are genetic response to sun exposure. lentigines or sunspots are sun damage which are permanent

“you can permenantly create natural freckles”
you cant, natural freckles are caused by sun exposure depending on genetics. however you can achieve semi permanent freckles

“henna freckles always work”
henna freckles dont always work, henna struggles to stain oily skin, black henna can contain chemicals like PPD which will burn your skin and give u allergies
