well in the past, natural selection allowed the smart humans to survive bc they were smart enough to gather food, survive, and do complex social things such as communication. thus, these people would survive better and be alive to reproduce and protect and provide for their mates. but attractiveness is also important. people use visual cues based on a person's phenotype to see if they have good genes to pass on for successful offspring and also for survival if the other person can provide for them. health, strength (muscularity), and certain features are all important for reproducing well. but now, with a significantly higher population, sexual selection is more pressured because of the influx of people and demand for good genes. but also, if you are intelligent, you can become rich and seduce people, securing a mate. thus, good cover+book content=attractiveness

beauty is more of a first thing you notice about someone, while intelligence is perceived by you over a period of time
so when people look around for potential books, they notice the cover first which will interest them into then opening the book and seeing its contents

If you're talking about purely attraction, intelligence is definitely far inferior to beauty, no one can tell how smart you are just by looking at you, but they can tell how beautiful you are.
But intelligence is extremely important in a relationship, no one wants to be with a dumbass.

To some extent I agree with you, you definetly need looks however (especially for a long term realtionship) to sustain a convesation with a fucking dumbss is extremely hard.
