On social media you often see mostly women using red light or blue light LED masks on their face.

But what purpose do they serve, what’s the difference between the two, why did it get so popular and what are the Device types?

⋆。‧˚ʚhow it got popularɞ˚‧。⋆
Red and blue light therapy got popular thanks to mainly the Kardashian’s in early 2016-2023
(Kourtney already used them back in 2016, I couldn’t find the insta post)

⋆。‧˚ʚPurpose & Differences between Red & Blue Light LED therapyɞ˚‧。⋆
Red LightBlue Light
Wavelength630-850 nm (deeper penetration)405-420 nm (surface level)
Primary PurposeCollagen boost, anti-aging, healingAntibacterial, acne control
Skin depthDermis (deeper layers)Epidermis (outer layer)
Best forWrinkles, scars, inflammationBreakouts, oiliness

⋆。‧˚ʚhow they workɞ˚‧。⋆
Red Light LED:
Red light (600-850 nm) hits mitochondrial proteins in skin cells, freeing them up to ramp up ATP energy production. This sparks collagen growth, cuts inflammation, and heals damage (like revving your cells engine for smoother, firmer skin)

Blue Light LED:
Blue light (405-420 nm) zaps bacteria's natural pigments, creating oxygen radicals that burst their cell walls. It clears acne fast by slashing oil and clogs right at the surface.

(⋆。‧˚ʚLittle comparison ɞ˚‧。⋆)
Red LightBlue Light
Targetscell engines (mitochondria)Bacteria pigments
Actionenergy boost & repair"radical kill"

⋆。‧˚ʚDevice typesɞ˚‧。⋆
  • Panels: Large arrays for full-body or targeted use - e.g. joovv solo 3.0 red light therapy device:

  • Masks: wearable - e.g. Omnilux:

  • "wands" - e.g. Solawave:

⋆。‧˚ʚmy own experience & recommendationɞ˚‧。⋆
I used the blue light "espada TM 2" wand together with the "espada bha pha blemish solution gel" from the brand FOREO for the past year and it has really helped my acne. Its also one of the more "cheap" LED wands on the market with really good quality.
