STRŌMA Explained | How to change your eye color
1. An explanation of the process & what clinics to go to
The STROMA Laser System, developed by STROMA Medical, is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure designed to permanently lighten dark eye colors.
Eye color is determined by the amount of melanin in the front layer of the iris. Dark eyes have a dense layer of brown melanin, underneath that layer every human has blue, green or grey eyes. STROMA uses frequency-specific light pulses to disrupt the brown pigment.
2-3 weeks after the first session, the body's immune response cleans up and drains the disrupted pigment through a drainage channel in the eye.
Step by step:
1. Topical numbing drops are applied, a computer controlled low energy laser is directed through the clear cornea
2. The laser fires light pulses that are only absorbed by the brown melanocytes, without damaging the rest of the eye. This takes 30-60 seconds per eye per session.
3. Weeks after the session, the body starts to clear out the disrupted cells, and your true eye color starts to reveal.
You can't control what eye color you get, this procedure reveals what eye color is underneath your brown layer, if you want a specific eye color, consider custom iris implants (they don't rlly look good though)
2. Grading System
More than 14 years ago, the eye pigmentation classification (EPC) was developed by Dr. Pedro Grimaldos, ophthalmologist and medical director at Eyecos, during his research into laser iridoplasty. Today, this classification is used as a reference to estimate, on an indicative basis, the number of sessions a patient may need according to their level of eye pigmentation.
The grading system doesn't count on your eye color itself, but how much dark pigment is in your eyes.
The unfortunate reality is that if you're grade 5, or sometimes even between 4 and 5, getting true light colored eyes will cost you upwards of $20,000.
3. Gabby Griffin's Experience
Gabby Griffin publicly documented her process of going to yeuxclairs for a total of 18 sessions, priced at roughly $650 per session. She was graded a Grade 5 on the EPC Scale. After 14/18 of those sessions, her eyes look like this.
There are some better photos of her eye color in harsh lighting, but if after spending $12,000 on the sessions + hotels you are left with a result like this, it might be time to give up
