A club thumb is a deformity wherein the thumb is shorter and broader than usual, and the top joint is more rigid and is often held bent. It could also be characterized as the thumb being rounder or stubbier than a typical thumb. It is most often inherited and is a normal anatomic variation. There are two types of club thumbs:

Genetic, the most common form and occurs naturally without external intervention. It is usually present at birth.
Acquired, can be caused by injury or illness causing deformity or restriction of thumb motion.

Procedures to Acquire a Club Thumb (if you don't already have one)

Unfortunately, there are no medically prescribed methods to "develop" a club thumb on purpose, as it is a deformity. Any methods to replicate this condition would be by attempting to alter the joint of the thumb surgically or externally. However, these surgeries are not carried out normally because:

Club thumb is generally viewed as a deformity, and for the most part, a club thumb is not an aesthetic goal, however it can be very cute. It's only treated in the case of functional disability. Surgical or invasive procedures to purposely deform a thumb would carry risks such as loss of function, pain, and long recovery periods.

Reasons to Have a Club Thumb

While it might not be universally wanted, there are a number of reasons why one would embrace having a club thumb:

Genetic uniqueness: Some people might view their club thumb as a defining characteristic of their body and celebrate its uniqueness rather than focusing on it as a problem.

Personal or cultural significance: In some cases, certain cultures or individuals may attach personal or symbolic significance to having a club thumb. For example, it may be seen as a family characteristic, a source of pride, or even an identity marker.

Functionality: If the club thumb does not significantly impact a person's functionality in carrying out everyday tasks, some may not feel the need to seek medical correction. In fact, most people with club thumbs adapt to their condition and use their thumb differently for various tasks.

Evolutionary perspective: Some evolutionary biologists have suggested that club thumbs may have been an adaptive trait in the past, giving increased grip strength or some other such advantage in certain environments, though this is speculation.

In general, though, medicine's primary interest would typically be in addressing any functional impairment one has with their thumb. In the absence of any functional problem, there would be minimal motivation to seek altering a thumb in order to achieve the appearance of a club thumb.
