WHY @Pentatonic IS WRONG

i saw this thread by @Pentatonic telling people that 4x12 is a one way ticket to fatigue and that beginners should be lifting heavy as hell for 2 or 3 sets of 6 to 8 reps and honestly it is some of the worst advice you can give to someone trying to build muscle. the whole idea that moderate rep ranges do more harm than good completely flies in the face of decades of actual sports science and research into hypertrophy. when you are just starting out your nervous system and your tendons are not ready to handle maximal heavy loads without your form breaking down completely. if you immediately start ego lifting heavy weight for low reps you are just asking for an injury or an early plateau because you never actually learned how to properly recruit the muscle fibers.the reality of progressive overload is that it is a massive spectrum and it does not just mean stripping reps away so you can put more plates on the barbell like @Pentatonic says. muscle hypertrophy is driven primarily by total training volume and taking sets close to muscular failure whether that happens at 6 reps or 12 reps or even 15 reps. if you do 10 reps with a certain weight this week and then next week you manage to hit 12 reps with that exact same weight you have successfully achieved progressive overload without risking your joints. dropping your volume down to just 2 sets of 6 reps leaves a massive amount of gains on the table because the total workload simply is not high enough to trigger maximum muscle protein synthesis over time.at the end of the day building a massive physique comes down to consistency volume and tracking your numbers in a notebook rather than trying to look cool on a forum thread. pushing yourself hard in the 8 to 12 rep range gives you the perfect balance of mechanical tension and metabolic stress without destroying your joints or leaving you too sore to function the next day. stop listening to the forum bros who tell you that lifting heavy as hell on day one is the only way to get big because all they are doing is burning themselves out. track your lifts stay consistent with this upper lower layout and let the actual science do the work for you.

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD

instead of running a high fatigue push pull legs split where you drop all your volume you should be running a structured 4 day upper lower split that focuses on high quality movements in the 8 to 12 rep range. a 4 day split hitting upper body on monday and thursday and lower body on tuesday and friday lets you train every single muscle group twice a week which is far superior for natural lifters. it maximizes muscle growth signals without forcing you to spend six days a week living in the gym and frying your central nervous system. by spacing out the workouts you give your body actual time to recover and adapt to the weights you are moving.for your upper body days you want to kick things off with a heavy compound movement like a barbell or dumbbell bench press for 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps to smash your chest and triceps. follow that up immediately with a vertical pull like lat pulldowns or chin ups for 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps ensuring you get a full stretch at the top to really grow the width of your back. next you want to hit an overhead dumbbell press for 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps for safe shoulder development and a chest supported row for 3 sets of 10 reps to build back thickness. finish off the upper session with a superset of bicep curls and tricep pushdowns for 3 sets of 12 to 15 reps because smaller arms muscles respond incredibly well to the massive pump and high metabolic stress of higher reps.on your lower body days you want to prioritize target stimulus over just flexing how much weight you can move so start with a hack squat or a heavy leg press for 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps which lets you completely destroy your quads without your lower back failing first. next you need to hit romanian deadlifts for 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps by hinging at your hips and feeling that deep stretch in your hamstrings which builds the back of your legs way better than standard deadlifts. to finish off the leg day and ensure total fatigue you do 2 sets of 12 to 15 reps on leg extensions and another 2 sets of 12 to 15 reps on a seated leg curl machine. wrap the whole workout up with 4 sets of 15 reps on standing calf raises making sure to hold the stretch at the bottom for two full seconds so you are actually using the muscle instead of just bouncing.

Bump, only thing id change is the split. PUSH, PULL, LEGS, REST, UPPER, LEGS, REST. Id definitely like to see a focused day for both push and pull with more variation. Apart from that this is good advice. Pentatonic is a newbie lifter who shouldnt be sharing advice

Yeah true

Okay man, i explained all questions u had in pms. You said you work out for a year. I work out for close to 4 years, you do have a nice lean physiuqe. And i do congraculate you for your passion for working out. I have used multiple different training methods and splits in long term. You could apply this too okay, better than just doing random stuff in gym. But working out with high intensity with 3×7 or so is much better than till medium discomfort with 4x12. Go all in instead sparing your energy to do 2+2+2+2+2=10. The way i do it is 5+5=10 if that makes sense. Which helped me much more and got me this big. Unless if you arent on steroids, you are wasting your energy and leaving gains back in the gym. You sent me a picture of yourself and hope you dont mind me putting it here because you openly gave me your picture. In comparison without any hate or disrespect;

This is you: Screenshot_20260804_021541_Chrome.webpScreenshot_20260804_021535_Chrome.webp

And this is 𝔓𝔢𝔫𝔱𝔞𝔱𝔬𝔫𝔦𝔠, amigo.Screenshot_20260723_003342_Video Player.webpScreenshot_20260514_001014_Video Player.webp

Im natural and sixteen years old. I built this muscle in a heightframe of 193 centimeters. Working out till i faint, with real connection with the sport. Started when i was 12 and learnt bodybuilding by great effort by myself.

Have a great day and keep in mind; just because im the biggest (ever) fish here, you dont need to be afraid to ask questions. Yes my arms could be the size of your waist, which could be a compliment for you too if you think about it, well maybe. But yeah, we all been grey here, love the confidence be yourself and workout however you fucking want to workout, no problem.

Take care,
