i’m 14, turning 15 in november and i recently got elastics with my braces to fix my moderate overjet (currently 5 mm, started at 6.5). i’m starting to see a good difference in my teeth but my chin still the same from the side. im scared the elastics won’t be enough for forward growth and i’ll end up w recessed chin at the end of my treatment despite having straight teeth. my ortho never said anything abt if my overjet is a dental or skeletal problem, he just said i’d have to get jaw surgery if i had waited longer to get treatment. should i trust the process and hope my jaw goes forward or will i end up recessed?

a lot of people don’t understand this, but elastics literally only move your teeth around. Not anything else will change in your face because of elastics, if its other gear then yeah, possibly. But rubber bands aren’t going to give you any forward growth.

should i ask my ortho if i can get appliances/gear that promote forward growth as well? my side is genuinely perfect but my mandible messes everything up and i hoped the elastics were gonna fix it 💔

i used to have a overjet, got braces for 2 years with elastics and my teeth r fine now but i have 0 chin so i still look like shit from the side. are you worried about having a overbite or having no chin projection?

i know my teeth will end up fine but i’m worried about my chin. it’s not SUPER bad but it does visibly go back a bit, when i push my jaw forward it looks really nice and balanced tho

based off pics you posted your chin doesnt look too bad, your mandible is recessed tho so idk if braces will be enough.

You can definitely trust the process. Since you're only 14, your jaw is still naturally growing, and elastics take full advantage of that to help guide it forward.
