Men build muscles in prison where there are only men, to drive off other men.

Women prostitute themselves with male guards in prison in exchange for weight loss drugs and makeup, to drive off competition.

So even when attracting the opposite gender is not possible because they are in literal prison. Both women and men care about reaching physical extremes.
