What Are Facial Thirds?

The face is divided horizontally into 3 sections:
  1. Upper third - Hairline to eyebrows
  2. Middle third - Eyebrows to the base of nose
  3. Lower third - Base of nose to bottom of chin

Ideally, these thirds are supposed to be roughly equal.

Why Facial Thirds Matter

Balanced thirds result in:
  • better harmony,
  • stronger side profile
  • ideal proportions
Examples:
  • Long lower third - mature, masculine, sometimes horse faced if excessive
  • Short lower third - babyface appearance
  • Long midface - mature, elongated appearance
  • Short midface - mostly associated with "pretty boys"

How To Measure Your Facial Thirds

Take a neutral, front-facing photo:
  1. camera at eye level
  2. relaxed face
  3. natural lighting
Upload to your notes app on ios, and use the ruler feature
You can also use photo markup tools like MarkupHero and PhotoMarkup

Frauds for Facial Thirds

Upper Third Fraud:
Hair - Covering the forehead reduces the perceived size of the upper third, and slicking the hair back results in increasing the perceived size of the upper third. Volume on sides makes the face appear shorter, Volume on top makes the face appear more elongated

Midface Fraud:
Glasses: Certain frames can shorten perceived midface length,
larger frames
lower set frames
thicker browline glasses
Facial hair: Can increase lower third presence and balance out midface length

Lower third fraud:
Beard shaping:
elongate chin
widen jaw
sharpen mandibular angle
Universal Fixes for balanced facial thirds:
  1. Low BF% - If your bodyfat percentage is currently high, reducing it makes cheekbones appear more pronounced, jaw sharper, and face shorter and more structured.
  2. Lighting - Top down lighting will exxagerate eye bags, midface length and asymmetry in the face, frontal lighting is the best
  3. Camera Lens: 50-85 mm focal lens is most ideal
