Well it is supposed to stop mouth breathing while you are asleep
 
I have seen people talking about losing forward growth because they are mouth breathing at night
 
Since i was a kid i used to breathe through the mouth while sleeping. I can make sure that it effected my maxilla a little. (I was not mouth breathing during daytime tho)

I would advise against that, sometimes mouthbreathing is necessary, sometimes the air is too dry and I cannot breathe through my nose.
