Does your nose ruin your face?
If yes, you’re likely considering a rhinoplasty. Before you go through with it, here are some things to consider, from someone who got one.
CHIN
A lot of people will look at their side profile and condemn their nose when in reality, it is their chin that is the problem. Look closely at your side profile. Is your chin recessed or underdeveloped? If yes, I would recommend to first look into chin filler, implants, or surgery before a rhinoplasty. A recessed chin can make your nose look more dramatic. An ideal chin and jaw can even out your nose, even if it is large.
PHILTRUM
If you have a droopy nose and want a rhinoplasty, measure the bottom of your septum to the top of your lip, instead of the tip of your nose. With rhinoplasties, surgeons will fix the droop and make your nose straight or even upturned. If you have a long philtrum that is covered by your nose, this may mean extra work, like a lip flip.
MOUTH BREATHING
After your surgery, for about a month, you will have stints in your new nose that help stabilize it, but they will block your breathing. Because of this, you will have to mouth breath. After your stints are taken out, it is common to have to put earplugs in your nostrils to shape them and to combat scar tissue blocking your airways. You will have to mouth breath. I had to teach myself how to breath through my nose again after my surgery. Make this a post op priority.
HONESTY
You will have to tell at least one person that you are having this surgery, as they will need to pick you up from the hospital and get your prescription. You will also have to take off school and work for a considerable amount of time. I got my surgery during winter break in college, which is a month long break.
SWELLING
Your face will swell and you will look crazy for at least two weeks. My bruises lasted for about a month, while my facial swelling went down after a few weeks. However, the nasal swelling after a rhinoplasty will last up to 6 months to a year. Your nose can look big and bulbous in the time before it heals.
WHAT YOU CAN’T DO ANYMORE
After your new nose, you will have to be extra careful with it. Breaking it could cause it to become malformed, as most of the tissue that would be used to fix it would have been used in your rhinoplasty. That means no jobs or sports where you might get hit in the face.
Additionally, NO SNORTING ANYTHING.
If you’re snorting meth or coke to stay skinny like Clav, not only will you have to stop in recovery; it is highly recommended that you stop snorting forever, or at least for a year after. The chemicals in these drugs can errode your septum, which is now thin and lacking extra tissue from your rhinoplasty. It could cause a hole to form, or even a collapse. Be honest with your surgeon and inform them if this is a concern of yours.
If you are considering a rhinoplasty or have one scheduled and you have questions, don’t be afraid to ask!
